Translating Projection:

2D/3D digital and analogue

Projection is a term used in cartography to refer to the systematic process of translating the 3D space of the globe into the 2D plane of a map. Inspired by the concept of translation, technology will be explored as a method to draw in space. We will use plexiglass, mirrors, projectors, live feed camera’s, and other tools to experiment with translations between the 2 dimensional and the 3 dimensional.

(Description of workshop led by Cameron Forbes & Santiago Tavera at Centre des arts actuels Skol on June 26th, 2014 as part of the Marking Space: A drawing research lab summer residency).

"...questions around the relationship between 3D and 2D space,  investigating drawing as a means to explore the opportunities and limitations of each. What happens when we translate something from the 3D world into a 2D representation- what is lost/ changed/ misinterpreted/ exaggerated?...

Participants  were asked to consider the properties of the physical world (the dynamics of light, shadow, gravity, mass) as their own drawing language. The group explored these ideas using traditional mark-making tools, as well as light, live-feed cameras, tape, plexi-glass and sculptural materials to create collaborative drawings in space" (Christine Garvey).

 SPATIAL DRAWINGS

The alteration and creation of space was documented by particpants throught out the workshop with disposible cameras.

Spatial drawing

From trace making to immersive lines

From physical flatness to digital space

A corporeal experience through the detachment of the body due to technology

And made for the body

The space becomes an unknown space

The unknown becomes fantasy

Light is used to trace architecture

The digital/line

Is the line in-between

Drawing not as the embodying of time and space BUT drawing as an exploration of it as a maquette and sketch

Line as space and time in motion______________________Drawing  a dynamic stasis

A line becomes the translational space

Between one point and another

Made and occupied by a body

Transported to a corpo-reality and fantasy

A dynamic static experience between the two

Bringing the imaginative to reality and pushing reality to an illusion

Constant cycle from a 2 dimensional object to a 3 dimensional space

Always a back and forth motion between the two

Informing each other

Affecting each other

...

The architectural space, materials and media work together

To intersect and alter the lines, shapes and colours in space

Interacting and compromising with each other

Always in a process of translation
